Keyboard

Everything in the extension can be reached and operated from the keyboard. There is no control that appears only on hover: row actions live behind a menu button that is a real tab stop, and controls that are dimmed at rest are dimmed with opacity rather than removed from the tab order — the shortcut that would have hidden them from a screen reader and a keyboard at the same time.

Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) opens a command palette that reaches every action, every saved reminder and every template, and can create a reminder from a typed phrase. The date picker is operated with arrow keys, Home and End; dropdowns support arrows, Home, End, Escape and type-ahead. Escape backs out of one layer at a time rather than closing everything at once.

Screen readers

Controls carry names rather than relying on an icon to explain them. The queue is a single tab stop that you enter and then arrow through, which is the behaviour a long list should have. Status changes — a reminder saved, an import undone, a tag applied to a selection — are announced through a live region rather than only appearing on screen.

The custom date picker and dropdowns are built as a dialog and a listbox, with the active option announced as you move through it. Where a count matters — three reminders on a day in the calendar — the count is in the accessible name, because the visual version is three lines of clipped text.

Language and direction

Latr ships in German, English, French, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese, and the “When” field reads plain-language times in all nine. Plurals are selected by CLDR category rather than by a singular/plural guess, so languages that distinguish two-to-four from five-and-up decline correctly.

The interface mirrors for right-to-left languages. It is built on logical CSS properties throughout, so the mirroring is the layout doing it rather than a second stylesheet, and the handful of things that cannot be expressed logically — a chevron's direction, a switch's travel — are handled explicitly.

Motion, colour and contrast

Animation is limited to short transitions and is disabled entirely when your system asks for reduced motion. Colour is never the only carrier of meaning: a tag has a name as well as a colour, and a reminder's urgency is in its countdown as well as its styling. Light and dark themes are separately tuned rather than one inverted into the other, and the countdown badge for a reminder firing within the hour meets WCAG AA contrast in both.

Where it falls short

This section exists because an accessibility page without one is marketing.

• Latr has not been audited by anyone but its author, and has not been tested with JAWS or Dragon. It has been exercised with keyboard-only navigation and with the accessibility tree, which is not the same thing as being used daily by someone who depends on a screen reader.
• The calendar’s month grid is navigated by clicking a day or paging with the arrow keys; it does not yet support arrowing cell to cell within the grid.
• Notification appearance, timing and sound are drawn entirely by your operating system. Latr cannot adjust any of it, including how long a notification stays on screen.
