Getting started
What it does, how fast it is, and where it runs.
How long does it take to save a reminder?
One keystroke. Pressing Alt+Shift+Y saves the page you are on at your default time, and a small note on the page confirms it with Undo and Change time - no popup opens and there is nothing to type. If you want a different time, the toolbar popup opens with the page title and a sensible default already filled in, so it is still one click to save.
Do I need an account to use Latr?
No. There is no sign-up, no login and no server. Latr stores your reminders in your own browser, and a free install makes no network requests at all - so there is no account to create, nothing to be logged out of, and no service that can shut down and take your reminders with it.
Which web browsers are supported?
Chrome, Firefox and Edge have their own listings. Brave, Vivaldi, Arc and Opera all install the Chrome build straight from the Chrome Web Store and behave identically - they are Chromium underneath.
Does Latr work on mobile phones?
No, and no extension does - mobile browsers have no extensions to install. What Latr can do is show a QR code that opens a page on your phone at the place you were reading, and hand a reminder to Google Calendar, Outlook or an .ics file in one click, so your phone rings for it.
Features
Snoozing, open tabs, sharing and the companion.
Can I snooze a tab and get the page back later?
Yes - that is the whole mechanic. One keystroke files the tab you are on, so you can close it, and at the time you chose the tab reopens on its own, quietly in the background, at the spot you stopped reading. You get a notification too, but you do not have to catch it. Seven snooze lengths are built in, two of them sit on the notification itself, and anything else is typed in plain words. Latr stores the address and the time as a record, so quitting or restarting the browser changes nothing.
What happens if my browser is closed when a reminder is due?
Your tab reopens as soon as you next open your browser, and the notification says it arrived late rather than turning up with no explanation. Latr lives in your browser, so a reminder cannot fire while the browser is shut. For anything you genuinely cannot miss, hand it to Google Calendar or Outlook when you save it - one click, and your phone rings whether the laptop is open or not.
Can Latr manage the tabs I already have open?
Yes. The Open tabs screen lists every tab in every window with duplicates marked, and lets you close, move and merge them. From there you can sleep inactive tabs to free memory without closing them, put two tabs side by side, or wrap up the day - save every window, close them, and have each one come back tomorrow morning. Latr asks to see your tabs the first time you open that screen, not at install.
Can I share a set of tabs with someone?
Yes, as one link. Share a single reminder, a session of tabs you saved together, or pages you select in the library, and Latr copies an ordinary https link to latr.page. The pages travel inside the link itself, after the # that browsers never send to a server, so nothing is stored anywhere - including by us. Someone with Latr adds the whole set in one click and can change its name or time first; someone without it sees every page and where to get Latr. One link carries up to 50 pages, and never your notes, tags, folders or where you were reading.
What is the companion?
A small optional character in the Latr popup whose expression follows your queue: cheerful when it is clear, alert when a reminder is due within the hour, sad when one arrived and nobody answered it, grumpy when four or more are waiting. There are eight to choose from, you can name it, and you can use a photo of your own animal for each mood on the free plan. It answers what you do - “Got it. I’ll bring it back.” after a save - keeps you company during a focus session, and can be petted. It never sends a notification, never makes a sound and never keeps a score. You can try it on the companion playground at latr.page/companion.
Privacy and data
What Latr can see, what it keeps, and where it goes.
Is my data really private?
Yes, and it is architecture rather than policy. There is no account and no server of ours, so your reminders sit in your own browser's storage and there is nowhere else for them to go. The only network request Latr can ever make is verifying a Pro licence key, and a free install never makes it. A share link carries its pages inside the link itself rather than on a server.
What permissions does Latr need and why?
Chrome shows no permission warning at all when you install Latr, which is unusual for this category. It asks for storage (to save your reminders), alarms (to fire them on time) and active-tab access, which lets it read the title and address of the one page you deliberately saved. Everything else - seeing your open tabs, importing bookmarks, reading a copied link - is optional and asked for from the button that uses it, so declining costs you that one feature and nothing else.
Does Latr sync across my computers?
Yes, and still without an account of ours. Turn sync on in Settings and Latr uses the sync your browser already has, so your queue, folders, tags and settings follow you between signed-in browsers. We never see the records. Saved windows and page pictures stay on the machine that made them, because both are larger than the browser's own sync allows; those travel in a backup file instead.
What if an update loses my saved tabs?
Latr takes a copy before every update, which is the one moment it knows is coming. The last five automatic copies are kept, plus every one you take by hand, and any of them restores from Settings in two clicks. They live on your own machine, like everything else here.
Can I export my reminders?
Yes. Export writes a JSON file that restores everything exactly, or a CSV you can open in a spreadsheet and sort. Import reads the JSON back. Neither asks for an account, and both work on a free install.
What happens to my reminders if I uninstall Latr?
They go with it. Reminders live in your browser's own storage, so removing the extension removes them - there is no copy on a server for us to keep, which is the same fact that makes the privacy claim true. Export first if you want them: it is one button in Settings.
Pricing
What is free for good, and what the one-time Pro adds.
Why is Latr free? What is the catch?
Latr runs locally on your machine, so there are no server costs to maintain. Everything that makes a reminder fire, arrive, repeat, snooze, sync or export is free, and is meant to stay that way. Pro is a one-time $19 upgrade for themes, notification sounds, moving companions and higher limits - none of which decide whether a reminder goes off.
Is the free plan a trial?
No. It does not expire and there is no reminder cap. Every part of getting reminded - capture, repeats, quiet hours, snooze, priority, sync, the calendar handoff, backup and CSV export - is free permanently. Pro changes how Latr looks and sounds, gives depth to things that already exist - several quiet windows rather than one, several early warnings, notifications in your own words - and lifts the ceilings on templates, saved views and per-site rules. Folders are unlimited on both plans.
What happens to my reminders if my licence lapses?
Nothing at all. Every reminder keeps firing exactly as before. Latr goes back to the built-in look and stops playing custom sounds, and the lists you are over the free limit on stay where they are - nothing is deleted and nothing stops working. Re-activating restores your theme and sounds as you left them.
Why is anything to do with reminders never paid?
Because a licence check can fail. A network outage, an expired card, a store having a bad day - none of those should ever cost you a notification you were relying on. So the licence is read only by the parts that draw and decorate, never by the part that delivers. That is enforced in the code and checked by the test suite.
Will anything that is free today ever become paid?
No. The free tier described here is the one Latr shipped with, and nothing in it moves behind the paywall later. Pro grows by adding things, not by taking them - marking a reminder done, following up automatically, pinning a repeat to a time zone and typing any repeat interval you like all arrived after launch, and all four are free. The 1.1 release added a dozen paid features and moved nothing out of the free tier to do it.
Why one payment instead of a subscription?
Latr costs almost nothing to run - reminders are stored and delivered entirely on your own machine. Charging a recurring fee for something with no meaningful recurring cost is difficult to justify, and most people are tired of subscriptions for small tools. One payment, all future updates.
Can Latr remind me when my browser is closed?
No, and no browser extension can - extensions only run while the browser runs. Latr catches anything that came due while you were away the moment you open it again, and tells you it is late rather than pretending otherwise. For anything you genuinely cannot miss, use the one-click Google Calendar or Outlook handoff: a calendar entry reaches your phone, which is the one thing an extension cannot do.
How do I get Pro once I have paid?
You get a licence key by email. Open Latr’s settings, scroll to Latr Pro, paste the key and press Activate Pro - themes and sounds switch on immediately. Redeeming is the only network request Latr ever makes, and it is re-checked at most weekly after that. If the check ever fails, every reminder keeps working exactly as before: Pro has never gated anything on the delivery path.
Can I buy for a team?
Yes. A five-seat licence is $79 and a ten-seat licence is $139 - the same key, redeemed on each person’s browser, with no admin console to run because there is no account system to run one for. Email us and we will send a checkout link.
What happens to Pro if I get a new computer?
Activate the same key again on the new one. Each redemption uses one of the licence’s activations, so if you are finished with the old browser, press “Deactivate Pro on this browser” in its settings first and the activation goes back. Releasing never touches your reminders - and since everything is stored locally, restoring a backup is what brings those across.
Troubleshooting
When a reminder did not arrive, or arrived late.
My reminder never fired
Was your browser open at the time? Latr uses the browser’s alarms, which only run while it is running. If Chrome was closed, the reminder arrives when you next open it - and says it is late. Are you inside your quiet hours? Options → Notifications. Anything due inside that window is held until it ends, on purpose. Are notifications blocked for Chrome at the operating-system level? On Windows: Settings → System → Notifications → Google Chrome. Latr shows a warning banner in the popup when it detects this. Still nothing? Write to us. Settings → About Latr has a Copy build details button; paste that line into the mail and we can skip two questions.
It fired, but hours late
That is the expected behaviour when the browser was closed through the reminder’s time, and the notification will say so rather than pretending it is on time. For anything that genuinely cannot slip, use the calendar handoff. One click puts the reminder in Google Calendar or Outlook, which reaches your phone.
The right-click menu item is missing
It only appears when text is selected. Highlight the date first, then right-click on the highlighted text. If it is still missing, reload the extension at chrome://extensions and try again.
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
Another extension may have claimed the same combination. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts to see what is bound and rebind Latr if needed. Chrome does not allow extensions to run shortcuts on internal pages like chrome:// or the Web Store.
I lost my reminders
Reminders live in your browser’s storage for the profile you installed into. A different Chrome profile has its own set. If you have a backup file, Options → Your data → Import JSON restores it, merging by id. If you uninstalled without exporting, they are gone. There is no server holding a copy - that is the trade-off of having no backend.
Nothing matches that. Ask it directly - it reaches a person.
Close the tab.
It will come back.
Free, no account, and nothing leaves your device. About ten seconds to install, and one keystroke to use.
Also on Brave, Vivaldi, Arc and Opera - straight from the Chrome Web Store listing.
