Cards you can size
Switch the layout to Cards and a slider sets how wide they are, from a dense wall of small tiles to a few large previews. The choice is remembered.
You remember a website by what it looked like - the green header, the photo at the top - and the bookmarks manager gives you a column of titles. Latr shows your bookmarks as cards with a picture of each page, in folders you can colour and arrange by dragging.
The problem
Six hundred bookmarks, half of them titled “Home” or “Dashboard” or nothing at all. You know the one you want - you would recognise it in a second - but the browser's manager offers a list of text and a tiny icon, so you open five to find one. A visual bookmark manager puts the picture back, which is the thing you actually remember.
How it looks
Your browser's bookmark tree sits in the Latr library sidebar, beside the pages you keep in Latr itself. Both can be drawn as a list or as a grid of cards.
Switch the layout to Cards and a slider sets how wide they are, from a dense wall of small tiles to a few large previews. The choice is remembered.
A page you kept in Latr carries the picture taken when you saved it. A browser bookmark gets one the next time you visit it. Hover any picture for a larger look, with the title and address.
A page with no picture yet shows its site's first letter on a colour worked out from the site, so the same site always gets the same mark - learned the way you learn a logo.
The pages you keep in Latr also have a table view, and every picture there was taken at the moment you saved the page - see saving tabs for later. Open tabs can be drawn as tiles the same way, on the tab manager.
The pictures
Most tools that show bookmark screenshots get them by loading your pages somewhere - your browser in the background, or a server - which means something is visiting every link you have saved. Latr does not. A picture is taken only when you are already looking at the page.
Open the library and choose your browser's bookmarks. Bookmark access is optional, so the browser asks once, at that click - never at install.
It is on the bookmarks view, and in Settings beside the other picture sources. The browser asks to let Latr see the sites you visit, because a picture of a page needs that. Decline, and everything else still works with letter cards.
When a page you have bookmarked is open and finished loading, Latr takes a picture of it and files it under that bookmark. Nothing is taken in a private window.
If you also kept the same page in Latr, its saved picture is used straight away. The rest appear one visit at a time.
The honest cost: a bookmark you never open again never gets a picture, and stays a letter card. That is the price of not visiting your links behind your back, and it is the same reason Latr will not check which bookmarks are dead. Pictures are stored on your device only. In Firefox, cards without a picture show the letter alone, because Firefox gives extensions no cached site icons.
Organising
A wall of pictures only helps if it is in an order you can find your way through. Every one of these writes to your real browser bookmarks, except the colours, which Latr keeps for you.
Give any folder a colour from its menu - red for work, green for the course, whatever you like. Browser folders have no colour of their own, so Latr holds it, and adjusts one that would be too faint to read.
Under Browser order, drag a card before or after another, or drop it on a folder to file it there. Move up and Move down in each bookmark's menu do the same from the keyboard.
Browser order, name A to Z or Z to A, site A to Z, newest or oldest. Folders stay together above the links, so you never read a list twice to find the way down.
Search covers the title and address of every bookmark, wherever it is filed. Tick several and move them to another folder at once, without opening any of them.
Making folders, renaming, editing an address, deleting with an undo, and giving a saved link a time so it comes back on its own are all on the bookmark manager. Bringing in a bookmarks file from another browser is on moving tabs to another computer.
Questions
Open the Latr library, choose your browser’s bookmarks in the sidebar (Latr asks for bookmark access the first time), and switch the layout to Cards. Drag the size slider to make the cards bigger or smaller. Pages you saved in Latr itself already show the picture taken when you saved them.
From your own visits. Once you turn on Take pictures as I visit, Latr takes a picture of a bookmarked page the next time you have it open, on your device, and files it under that bookmark. It never loads your bookmarks in the background to photograph them, so a free install still makes no network requests.
Because there is no picture of that page yet - you have not visited it since pictures were switched on, or you declined the access they need. Those cards show the site’s first letter on a colour worked out from the site, so the same site always looks the same; in Chrome and Edge the site’s icon is drawn over it when the browser has one cached. A bookmark you never open again stays a letter card.
Yes. Open a folder’s menu and pick any colour; it tints that folder’s icon in the sidebar and in the list. Browser bookmark folders have no colour of their own, so Latr keeps it, and nudges a colour that would be too faint to read until it is legible.
Sort by Browser order, then drag a bookmark above or below another, or drop it on a folder to file it there. Dragging is switched off while you search or use another sort, because the position would mean nothing there. From the keyboard, a bookmark’s menu has Move up and Move down.
Yes. Typing in the search field looks through the title and address of every bookmark you have, not only the folder you are standing in, because what you are looking for is rarely where you are. Clear the search and you are back in the folder you left.
Moving, renaming, sorting by hand and deleting all write to your real browser bookmarks, so the change shows in the browser’s own manager and bookmarks bar too. The pictures and folder colours are Latr’s and live only in Latr, on your device.
Free, no account, and nothing leaves your device. About ten seconds to install, and one keystroke to use.
Also on Brave, Vivaldi, Arc and Opera - straight from the Chrome Web Store listing.
