The problem

How to manage tabs when working on several projects

Three clients, a window each, plus the shared documents, the ticket queue and the dashboard you check on Fridays. By four o'clock the windows have mixed, the same spreadsheet is open three times, and at six you either leave everything open overnight or close it and spend tomorrow's first half hour finding it again. The browser has no idea where one project ends and the next begins, or that you will want all of it back at nine.

End of day, start of day

Save work tabs before leaving the office, reopen them tomorrow

The daily routine, in four steps. The first two take a few seconds each evening; the last one you set up once.

  1. 1
Wrap up the day: save and close every window.

Open Latr, go to Open tabs and choose Save and close all windows. Each window is saved as itself - its tabs, its tab groups, their names and colours - under a name with the date, then closed. You are left with one empty window and nothing lost. A Wrap up the day keyboard shortcut is there to assign if you want one.

  2. 2
Leave yourself a first line for the morning.

Every window you wrap up comes back tomorrow at nine - or at the morning time you set - on its own reminder. The optional First thing tomorrow field takes one line - what you will start with - and it becomes that reminder's note, so the morning opens on a decision rather than a pile. The windows stay saved whatever happens overnight.

  3. 3
In the morning, one press per project.

Latr opens its Saved windows page at the window that is due. Open every tab brings it back in a new window with its groups rebuilt; Open here instead of this window swaps out the window you are in, saving it first.

  4. 4
Make it a routine: every weekday at 9:00.

On a window you open daily - email, the board, the team's documents - choose Remind me, then edit that reminder in your queue and set Repeat to every weekday. Your work tabs reopen every morning without you asking. More on saving and restoring in the session manager.

During the day

Organise tabs by project automatically

Most of the mess in a working browser is tabs ending up in the wrong place. These keep each project's tabs together without you dragging anything.

A group per client

A grouping rule names a client's sites, or a word in their page titles, and every matching tab joins that client's named, coloured group as it opens. Five rules are free. Grouping tabs automatically shows the syntax.

Work and personal, apart

Every window in one list, numbered. Send a tab to another window or a new one from its menu, merge two windows into one, or drag tabs between windows on the tab board - see the window manager.

One copy of each document

Duplicates are marked and close in one press. Switch on prevention and a link to a shared document you already have open takes you to that tab instead of opening a third - closing duplicate tabs.

Find any tab by typing

The Open tabs list filters across every window as you type, and Enter jumps to the first match. Quick switch does the same from a keyboard shortcut you assign.

Pages that come round

The report every Friday, the timesheet on the last working day of the month, the renewal in ninety days: save the page with a repeat and it reopens on its own each time. See recurring website reminders.

Resources, filed by client

Pages with no time go in the library: a folder per client or project, as many as you need, tags across them, and a search over titles, notes and sites.

Protecting the hours

Meetings, presentations and a focus timer for remote work

A reminder is only useful if it arrives when you can act on it. These decide when that is - and none of them ever drops one: a held reminder arrives as soon as the hold ends.

Quiet hours round a meeting

Set a daily quiet window over the standing meeting and anything due inside it waits until it ends. One window is free; several, such as lunch as well, is Pro.

Nothing over a presentation

Pause reminders in full screen holds them while the browser is full screen, as it is when you present or share a window - for up to 30 minutes.

Nothing about your clients' pages leaves your computer: there is no account and no server for your data, and a free install makes no network requests - the detail is on a tab manager without an account.

Questions

Work tabs, asked directly

How do I save all my work windows before closing Chrome?

Open Latr, go to Open tabs and choose Save and close all windows. Every window is saved as it is - tabs, tab groups, names and colours - and closed, and each lands in Saved windows under a name with the date, kept out of the automatic rotation so it cannot be pushed out overnight. Each one also gets a reminder to come back tomorrow morning.

How do I reopen my work tabs every morning?

Give a saved window a reminder with Remind me, then edit that reminder in your queue and set Repeat to every weekday at 9:00. Each morning Latr opens its Saved windows page at that window, and one press of Open every tab brings back every tab with its groups. It is an ordinary reminder, so quiet hours, snooze and editing all work on it as usual.

Can Latr organise tabs by project automatically?

Yes, with grouping rules. Each rule names the sites, or words in the page title, that belong to a project, and a tab that matches joins that named, coloured tab group as it opens. Tabs you grouped yourself and pinned tabs are never moved. Five rules are free; more is part of Pro.

How do I keep work and personal tabs apart?

Keep them in separate windows and let Latr do the sorting: the Open tabs list shows every window as its own numbered group, and any tab can be sent to another window - or to a new one - from its menu. At the end of the day, save the work window by name and close it, and the personal one is all that is left.

Will reminders pop up while I am presenting or in a meeting?

Not if you tell Latr not to. Quiet hours hold reminders through a daily window, such as a standing meeting, and deliver them when it ends - one window is free, more is Pro. Pause reminders in full screen holds them while the browser is full screen, as it is when presenting or sharing a window, for up to 30 minutes. Pause reminders holds everything for an hour, two, four or until tomorrow morning.

Is there a focus timer for remote work?

Yes. Latr’s Pomodoro timer runs in the browser - 25 minutes of focus and 5 of break by default, every length adjustable - and keeps going with the popup closed. Reminders wait until the break, and a list of sites can be kept shut during focus time. It is free.

Is it free to use for work?

Every workflow on this page is free, with no account and no cap on how much you save. Pro is a one-time purchase for personalisation and higher limits, such as more grouping rules and more quiet-hour windows, and there are licences for teams of five or ten. Nothing that makes a reminder fire, repeat or reopen is ever paid.

Close the tab.
It will come back.

Free, no account, and nothing leaves your device. About ten seconds to install, and one keystroke to use.
