Activating your licence

Paste your key into Settings → About Latr. Latr asks permission to contact latr.page once, checks the key, and switches Pro on. Nothing but the key is ever sent.

Activating

  1. Open Settings → About Latr.
  2. Paste the licence key from your purchase email.
  3. Your browser asks whether Latr may connect to latr.page. Allow it — this is the only thing the extension will ever use it for.
  4. Pro switches on immediately. Themes, sounds and dependencies appear, limits lift.

Nothing else needs setting up. Any themes or sounds you had already configured come back as they were, because they were kept rather than discarded.

Why it asks for a permission

Latr ships with no permission to contact anything on the internet. That is what makes "a free install makes no network requests" literally true rather than a summary — the extension is not merely choosing not to, it is not allowed to.

So checking a licence needs that permission, and it is requested at the moment you activate rather than at install time. If you never buy Pro, Latr never asks and never has it.

What is sent

Your licence key, and an identifier for this activation so the seat can be released later. That is the whole request.

No reminder, no page address, no title, no note, no settings, no email address, no identifier of you. The server answers one question — is this key real, and is it ours — and it has no way to answer any other question because it is never told anything else.

More than one machine

One licence covers several of your own installs. Activate each with the same key.

Activation does not travel through sync — it is per install, on purpose, because "which machines is this licence on" is exactly the thing a seat count is counting.

Changing computers? Release the old one first: Settings → About Latr → Deactivate. That frees the seat immediately. If the machine is already gone, get in touch and it can be released from our side.

The weekly re-check

Latr re-checks the licence at most once a week, quietly. If that check cannot reach the network — you are offline, or the service is having a bad day — the licence keeps its current status and is simply checked again later.

An unreachable server is not a refund. Pro does not switch off because your wifi did.

If it will not activate

  • Check for stray spaces. Copying from an email often takes a trailing space with it. Latr trims what it can, but it is the commonest cause.
  • Make sure the permission was allowed. If you dismissed the browser prompt, the check has no way out. Try activating again and accept it.
  • Check you are out of seats. If the key has been activated on several machines already, deactivate one you no longer use.
  • A network error is not a rejection. Latr distinguishes "we could not ask" from "the answer was no", and says which. If it says it could not reach the service, try again later.

Still stuck? Email us with the key and we will sort it out. Your reminders keep working the entire time — see if your licence lapses.

Something unclear, or something Latr does that this page does not cover? Tell us — the page is easier to fix than the confusion it causes.
