Sync across your browsers

How it works

Chrome and Firefox both carry a small amount of extension data between browsers signed into the same profile — the same mechanism that moves your bookmarks and saved passwords between your laptop and your desktop. Latr can use it.

Nothing about that involves a server of ours. We do not run one for this, there is no account to make, and the data path is between you and your browser vendor exactly as it already was for your bookmarks. If you have your browser profile sync switched off, this setting does nothing.

Turning it on

Settings → Your Data → sync. It is off by default, which is the right default for something that moves your data between machines without asking.

The first time you switch it on, everything you already have is pushed at once rather than one reminder at a time — browsers cap how many writes an extension may make per minute, and a hundred separate writes would fail halfway and leave you with half a copy.

What travels

• Your reminders — title, address, time, note, tag, folder, repeat, priority
• Your settings, including quiet hours, defaults and snooze choices
• Tags, folders, templates, saved views and per-site rules

So a reminder saved on your work laptop appears at home, and firing it in one place settles it in both.

What does not

• Page thumbnails. A single screenshot is roughly 12–40KB, and browser profile sync caps a single item at about 8KB. One thumbnail would blow the quota for everything else, so they stay on the machine that took them. A reminder synced from elsewhere simply shows no picture.
• Uploaded notification sounds. Same reason, more so — an audio file is far past the limit. Upload it on each machine you want it on.
• Your Pro licence activation. Activating is per install; a licence covers several, and each one is activated on its own.

Two browsers, one reminder

Edits arrive in the order the browser delivers them, and the most recent write wins. Latr is not a collaborative document and does not try to merge two simultaneous edits of the same reminder — in practice you are one person and the case is rare.

Deletions travel too. Deleting a reminder on one machine removes it from the others, so the undo window in the popup is the safety net rather than a copy left behind elsewhere — see accidental deletions.

If you would rather not

Leave it off and move things by hand when you need to. A JSON backup carries everything sync carries and more, and restoring it on another machine is a two-click job. It is also the honest choice if you would rather your reminders never touched your browser vendor's servers at all.

Either way, where your data lives spells out exactly what is stored and what leaves.
